The name Vikara represents my dedication to making water a safe and supportive space for children on the autism spectrum. My aim is to help them thrive through hydrotherapy by tailoring each session to their specific wants and needs. Water therapy offers countless benefits—promoting sensory integration, improving coordination, and encouraging relaxation. But what makes this work meaningful is taking the time to connect with each child, understanding their comfort levels, and building a unique path for them to engage with water, whether it’s their first time or their hundredth.
Over the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of working with over 40 students, spending about two hours daily guiding them in the water. I focus on helping each child grow more comfortable and capable in the pool, gradually transforming any initial fear into confidence and excitement. Alongside hydrotherapy, I also teach fundamental survival skills, helping young swimmers develop techniques for water safety. Swimming can be an intimidating skill to master, but I believe it’s a life-saving one that everyone deserves to learn in a supportive and nurturing environment.
My work with Vikara has inspired me to dive deeper into the impact of autism on families. Recently, I conducted research to explore how children on the spectrum influence the mental health and well-being of their parents. I gathered quantitative data from 30 parents and legal guardians through a self-report questionnaire. This research is a step toward understanding the broader effects of autism within families, which will help me shape Vikara’s approach to better serve both children and their parents.
Ultimately, I hope to grow Vikara into a haven where water is more than just a space for therapy—it becomes a source of safety, joy, and healing for children and families alike.
